Each illustration from Northern California is paired with an excerpt from a travel journal, a tribute to my travels in Europe during which I began to see the edges of things in a way that inhabitants - too close, too familiar - could not. I recorded these journeys in illustrated journals which I lugged around Spain, Italy, Ireland; and later, Morocco, France, Slovenia.* My biggest fear upon returning to the Bay Area was that I might lose this particular way of seeing and representing places. It is an ongoing challenge to keep my gaze sharp and open, to see something new in this beloved place. Please stop in this Friday for an ice cream and a chat; I would love to talk about the places we've been.
