From 2004-2007 I worked as an elementary school library media teacher. This position is what inspired me to try my hand at authoring and illustrating children’s books - hence the creation of my first children’s book,Over in the Valley, which is a visually rich interpretation of the classic song “Over in the Meadow.” I adapted the counting song and its animal characters to shine light on the San Joaquin Valley’s native species and their habitats. I am currently working on my second book about our local farmer’s markets.

 ::Maybe This Time::
is a collection of paintings and block prints that I've created over the years, especially this past one. The title is referring to the trial and error of the things that we do in art, in learning and in life. I would say I am self-taught for having not gone to school but truthfully I have had mentors all along the way teaching by example, encouraging progress and inspiring in every direction, pushing me to try new mediums and techniques and study other artists as well.

 As a child, my mom always made art supplies available to me. There was no set time to do art, it was all the time. I remember the smell of the Tupperware full of crayons that would barely close, the feel of children's scissors on construction paper and the click of a Crayola marker cap. My dad would make origami cranes and frogs out of the paper place mats at restaurants when we waited to be served. As an adult, that art flow never stopped and I continue to encourage my own two children to use their creativity as their voice. The masterpieces they've created on the Magnadoodle and quickly erased have taught me a lesson, the magic we can draw is temporary and doesn't do justice to what the minds eye sees, but we try anyway.

	"It's A Jungle Out There" I seem to be most content with a paintbrush in my hand. I went to school at the Laguna College of Art and Design before moving to San Francisco and then on to Berkeley, which I now call home.
I like to draw or paint just about anything, from day dreams to a piece of fruit that looks too pretty to eat. I can’t seem to stick to one medium. Sometimes I like the ease of watercolor, or the texture of oil. Sometimes I like to get my fingers thick with clay.
I find inspiration in the way light bounces off of skyscrapers and am equally enthralled by the views of clouds from airplane windows. My work celebrates the wonder in everyday things often taken for granted.

 One of my favorite memories from my childhood is of my mother teaching me how to draw a circle, once I could draw a circle she taught me how to use different circles to draw ninja turtles. Ever since, I have been looking for inspiration in many forms, from shapes and designs in wood grain, to comic books, to stains on the sidewalk. I like to make very vibrant works of art, I try to use a wide assortment of colors even if they aren't particularly attractive.

	"Catching Tales: One for One Hundred" is a self-assigned photo project I began on February 1st in which I take and make public one abstract, frequently Rorschach-ish photo a day for one hundred days.

	"In general, however, I feel deep anxiety around these subjects and can get emotionally overwhelmed thinking about and trying to reconcile the lack of ownership and responsibility reflected in Waste and Destruction. The nearer I get and the closer I look, though, the less anxious I feel. Seeing these from a new perspective becomes an exciting adventure, and if I can focus on what is right in front of me instead of the “Big Picture, as it's not overwhelming; it's calming, like a whole other world exists of which most people, myself, included are largely unaware and ignorant."

	Scott Finsthwait is a school teacher by day and photographer morning, noon, and night.

	Every Day Visions is an ongoing series that pulls from the different roles that I find myself in throughout the week. I am a student and a teacher, a musician and an artist, a partner and a friend. As I move through these roles in my day-to-day life, different projects emerge. Although the images range in style and content, I believe there is a common thread that brings them all together to convey something about how I experience the world.

	For this installment of Every Day Visions, I am entirely using brown bag material. This kind of paper is one that most of us have had contact with and touched with our hands; it is an everyday material. The color and texture of brown paper bags has always been beautiful to me, and it’s the kind of beauty that can often go un-noticed due to its everyday-ness. The concept of the ordinary and overlooked beauty fits in perfectly with the kind of images that I strive to make with a camera. The tone of the paper bag infuses some warmth into a black & white photo, and the non-traditional paper offers the viewer a look at the content from a slightly different perspective. I hope you enjoy the images!

	Reverie: a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts; a daydream.

 I often float into the clouds. Find me where time is still, in harsh headlights I watch the stars leave their mark in the sky. These are the late hours of reverie.

	"I've been working around this idea of the photos being a fleeting moment, a hazy memory, or even people and places from dreams you can only remember seconds from. Lately, I have noticed a few trends in my work; a more graphics-based approach to subjects, a focus on light and light sources as the subject, and a deep interest on seeing that wich the human eye cannot."

	If you haven't seen this amazing and striking exhibit of photos, you still have a few days to check it out.

	On exhibit @ TOIC Temescal through February 22nd.
